With newer cars, or clear coat re-paints - they seem to last OK, when you hand wax, hand wash and hand dry. Once the layer is compromised, most "idiots", not knowing why it happened - will use buffing compound to bring the shine back.the worst thing you can do! Like you mentioned, the clear coat layer is way too thin. You can not "buff out" clear coat paint with the same vigor or use abrasives on it - Damn, skippy you better not even "think" about color sanding or putting a buffer to a factory paint job. If you look at many of those prematurely ruined clear coated paint jobs you can actually see where "jethro", "Bubba" or "Juan" leaves buffer tracks - burning through the clear. Very dangerous, with many unintended consequences. A buffer in the hands of the wrong person is like giving a loaded gun to a monkey. However, the biggest issue in most cases is power buffers.
